It's relatively trivial to replace the optic of a PIC that has a soldered 9-pin optic.

In the case of my PE-1OC12-SON-MMF I used a 9-pin optic with the following specs:

  • Data Rate: 622Mb/s
  • Distance: Intermediate
  • Wavelength: 1310nm
  • LD/PD Type: FP-LD/PIN-TIA
  • Connector: SC/PC
  • Package Type: 1 X 9 Pin
  • Temperature: 0-70
  • Voltage: +5v
  • Data/SD Interface: Data-PECL, SD-PECL
  • Fiber Type: SM

The typenumber of the replacement optic was 9STR-12-33111152.

Here are some pictures of the process:

Step2.jpg Remove the PCB from the board.

Step3a.jpg Remove the solder from the original optic so you can remove it.

Step3b.jpg Check top if everything is fine.

Step3c.jpg Check bottom if everything is fine.

Step4a.jpg New optic.

Step5a.jpg Put new optic in place.

Step5b.jpg Solder new optic and check connections.

Step6.jpg Check if it's working and don't forget to label it with new specs. :)
