Replacing/Upgrading compact-flash on a RE
The compact flash can be upgraded on most RE's.
RE2.0 aka RE333
Upgrading the CF is a bit of work since you have to remove most parts of the RE to gain access to the CF. Its not soldered, its on the bottom of the circuit board. You need to unscrew the board on top of it first. For that you need to remove 5 screws on the bottom of the RE that hold 5 bolts for the upper board and 1 screw (the upper one) on the front side. Here a picture after removal of the upper board showing the CF slot in the middle.
Once you have access to the CF you have to remove a plastic screw (in the middle of the picture, on a lug right above the CF) that safes the CF from loosening and than you can easily remove and replace it.
SanDisk SDCJF-2048 (Standard CF) are confirmed to work with RE2.0
RE3.0 aka RE600
The RE3 can be easily upgraded. The CF is in a hotswap socket on top of the board and can be pulled out easily.
RE4.0 aka RE400
The RE4 can be easily upgraded. The CF is in a hotswap socket on top of the board and can be pulled out easily.
For JunOS 8/9 you will need atleast 1GB of CF. A working solution is 1GB sandisk CF. Be sure to pick the older ones (not extreme ones). Working ones
are labeled with "BB070905966B" and on one side and with "SDCFJ 03 Sandisk" on the back. See picture below.
RE5.0
The RE5 can be easily upgraded. The CF is in a hotswap socket on top of the board and can be changed easily.
SanDisk SDCJF-2048 (Standard CF) are confirmed to work with RE5.0
