Talk:J4350
From Juniper Clue
Hi everyone.
I just received my J4350-JB-SC box - a real nice piece of hardware. 4 times 10/100/1000MBit over copper ports at the front, console, aux and 2x usb for mass storage.
I will give the box a try with my ixia tester. Let's check what amount of bandwidth will go through the box (I will need some time to perform the tests).
Some things that I found curious about this box:
- Delivered with 256MB CF card (40x speed by Pretec) and JunOS 8.0
- You need more than 256MB Flash to install a newer JunOS (so upgrade it to at least 512MB)
- Only 256MB RAM. About 85% used after boot. So you really want to upgrade to more ram. I'll buy 4x 512MB MDT modules and bring the router to 2gig. Will cost around 120 Euros here in germany. So that's not an issue.
- no aggregated ethernet interfaces
- real quite design. fans running at low speed, spin up as soon as the temp goes up more than some degree celius. Wondering if my girlfriend would accept is as my new soho-router :-)
- a 40-pin header at the MoBo. Seems like this is a IDE-port. A SATA power connector coming from the PSU might power a hdd. Anyone?
- solder-pads for a 2nd CF card slot at the front right of the usb-ports but not used.
- real nice web-frontend for basic setup
I will spend some more time with testing this box soon. But that's it for now. Any comments? Questions? The router is bought to replace a quagga-box. Around 2400 Euros is quite cheap. Try to buy a cisco box with the same technical details for less than 5k ...
Memory
Hi,
I just added 2x Kingston 1GB PC-3200 RAM modules. So I now have 2 Gig of memory.
The exact Kingston module number: KHX3200/1G (1GB PC3200 CL2.5 184-Pin DIMM)

BGP performance
Anyone has any idea how is the BGP performance of the J4350 router? Specifically, how many BGP full route can it hold given 2Gig RAM?
At this time, I have 5 fulltables and several big peerings (2000+ prefixes).
Memory usage:
- Forwarding daemon @ 22%
- Routing Protcols @ 9-10%
So I suppose you can have a lot of fulltables configured.
I can not say anything about the performance - I only have ~100MBit flowing through the router. But there's nothing to comply about yet. So have fun :-)
PPS Throughput
Juniper claim the J4350 will throughput 300,000pps.
Using a UDP flood script I could generate 200,000pps.
When transiting the router the CPU was at 85%.
When directed at the router it died until I added a policer to the loopback.
When transiting the router to unknown destination the router died unless I added a static 0.0.0.0/0 discard route.

Upgrade CPU test
I tested my J4350 with a Pentium4 530 3.0GHz,
with a load of 900Mbps NAT loading by using TTCP,
- CeleronD 2.53GHz load about 60%
- Pentium4 3.0GHz load about 40%
